Splitwise alternatives: what to look for
Comparing bill-splitting apps? These are the questions worth asking, and how Settled answers them, including what it does not do.
Why people look for another app
Bill-splitting apps all solve the same problem, but they differ in ways that matter once you actually use them: who has to sign up, how fair the maths is, and how clear the balances are. If you are comparing options, these are the things worth checking.
A checklist
- Can you use it without making everyone sign up? The best app for a one-off dinner is the one your friends can open from a link without creating an account.
- Does it split by item? Splitting a restaurant bill or a grocery receipt evenly is unfair when people ordered very differently. Look for item-level splitting.
- Is tax and tip handled properly? They should be shared in proportion to what each person's items cost, not split evenly.
- Is the arithmetic exact? Splits should add up to the exact total to the penny, with no drift from rounding each person separately.
- Does it have more than one way to split? Even, exact amounts, and shares (for rent where one room is bigger) cover nearly everything.
- Are balances clear, and can they be settled with few payments? A good app shows who owes whom and suggests the fewest transfers that settle everyone.
- Can you correct mistakes? Look for editing, deleting, and a record of changes, so one wrong entry does not poison the whole group.
- How does it treat your privacy? Check whether your email is shown to other people, and whether you can download your data and delete your account.
- What does it cost, and what is limited? Read the current pricing and limits on the app's own site, since they change.
How Settled measures up
Settled is built around that list:
- No account for a one-off. A quick split is a single link. Friends open it, add their name and tap what they had.
- Itemized splitting with tax and tip shared by what each person bought, and exact-penny maths.
- Amounts or shares for anything that is not a receipt, such as rent.
- Balances and the fewest payments to settle everyone, per group and across all your groups.
- Editing and history. Expenses can be changed or deleted, and transfers are logged.
- Privacy. Invites go by username, so your email is never shown to a group. You can download all your data and delete your account from Account.
What Settled does not do (yet)
It helps to be clear about the limits:
- It tracks who owes whom but does not move money. You pay each other however you like and mark it paid.
- Amounts are in US dollars only.
- An expense has one payer, and there are no recurring expenses yet.
If one of those is a deal breaker for you, another app may suit you better. If not, try a quick split and see whether it fits how your group actually works.
