How to split utilities with roommates

Internet is shared equally; the electric bill is not. Here is how to split each fairly, including the awkward partial month.

Start with what kind of bill it is

Not every utility should be split the same way. Internet and streaming are used by everyone about equally. Electricity, gas and water depend on how many people are home and how much they use. Deciding the rule per bill, once, saves an argument every month.

Three common ways to split utilities

Equally. Divide each bill by the number of people. It is simple, it needs no tracking, and it is fair when everyone lives there full time and uses about the same.

By shares. Give each person a number of shares that reflects how much they use the service, then split in proportion. Someone who is away half the month might count as half a share for electricity and gas, but a full share for internet, because the router runs either way.

By days. When someone moves in or out mid-month, split by the number of days each person lived there. It is the fairest way to handle a partial month.

A worked example

Three roommates, Alex, Sam and Jo. Jo is away for half the month. This month the bills are $60 for internet and $210 for electricity and gas, $270 in total.

PersonInternet (equal)Electricity and gas (shares)Owes
Alex$20.001 share: $84.00$104.00
Sam$20.001 share: $84.00$104.00
Jo$20.000.5 share: $42.00$62.00
Total$60.002.5 shares: $210.00$270.00

Each share is worth $210 / 2.5 = $84. An even split would have charged everyone $90, which is $28 too much for Jo and $14 too little for each of the others.

Habits that keep it painless

Do it in Settled. Make one group for the household. Add each bill as an expense, pick who shares it, and choose shares when usage differs (the amounts update live and always add up to the bill to the penny). Everyone sees the same balances, and the Balances tab shows the fewest payments that settle everyone.
