How to split groceries with roommates

Splitting groceries sounds simple until one person buys oat milk nobody else touches. Here is how to keep it fair without keeping a spreadsheet.

Three ways to split a grocery run

Split it evenly. Add up the receipt and divide by the number of people. It is the quickest, and it is fine when everyone eats about the same and nobody buys special items. It gets unfair the moment one person buys things only they use.

Split by item. Go through the receipt and mark who had each item. Shared things (milk, eggs, toilet paper) are split between everyone who uses them. Personal things belong to one person. It takes a minute longer and is the fairest option for mixed households.

Keep a shared staples pot. Agree that some things are always shared and split those evenly, and everything else is by item. This keeps the per-trip effort low.

Do not forget the tax

If your receipt has tax, do not split it evenly when the items are not. Share tax in proportion to what each person bought. Here is a trip with $60.00 of items and $4.80 of tax:

PersonItemsShare of taxOwes
Alex$24.00$1.92$25.92
Sam$36.00$2.88$38.88
Total$60.00$4.80$64.80

Alex had 40% of the items, so Alex pays 40% of the tax. The totals match the receipt exactly.

Pennies add up

When a total does not divide cleanly (say $10.00 among three people), someone has to take the extra cent. Rounding each person separately can leave the group a cent short or over. A better way is to round once at the end so the shares always add up to exactly the receipt total.

Who pays whom

One person usually pays the bill, so everyone else owes them. Over a few trips the amounts go in both directions. Instead of paying every trip, keep a running balance and settle up now and then. Balances across several people can often be settled with fewer payments than you would expect.

Do it in Settled. Type in the items (or paste them from a photo of the receipt using any AI chat), tap who had each one, and tax and tip are shared by what each person bought. Everyone in the group sees the same balances. No account needed for a one-off: a quick split is a single link your roommates can open and tap their own items.
